The Kiwanis Club of Hasbrouck
Heights-Teterboro commemorated their Fiftieth Anniversary Celebration with a Brunch at the
Holiday Inn on Sunday, February 2, 2003. The celebration also provided special
honors and accolades to one of the Clubs founding members -- Dr. Burnett Eglow.
The program began with the Pledge of Allegiance led by First Vice President Jim Jarvis,
followed by everyone singing America the Beautiful. Second Vice President
Barbara Smith, said the invocation. Club President Colleen Jarvis made welcoming remarks
and introduced guests.
Kiwanis NJ Governor Gwen Walding installed new members (husband and wife) Martin and
Maryetta Saccomano. Club Secretary Peter Gallo Jr., provided a history of the
Club. Colleen Jarvis gave a tribute to Dr. Burnett Eglow. Previous Board of
Education member Dr. Rudolph Selletti gave a light-hearted tribute to "Big
Burnie".
Presentations included: US House of Representative Steve Rothman, NJ Senator Joseph
Coniglio, Assemblywoman Rose Marie Heck, Assemblyman Matt Ahearn, Bergen County Executive
Dennis McNerney, Mayor William J. Torre, Councilman John Wassberg. Board of
Education (BOE) Trustee Edwinna Carroll presented Dr. Eglow with a resolution.
Also in attendance:
Town Council persons included: Bert Heeren, Andrew Link, Garrett Pepe and Marlene
Verrestro.
Past BOE members included: John Cassella, Marie Fitzgibbons, William Foley, Gil
Hunt, Joseph Jones, Peter Kepsel, Dr. James MacDonnall, John Morro, Jr., Dr. Gerald
Sternbach, Art Suriano, and Francis Visco.
Previous School Superintendents and Principals included: Dr. Paul Arriolatta, Dr.
Richard Stepura, Thomas King and Arthur Ranges.
BOE staff included: Joe Bellino, Dawn Schirmer, and Roberta Henriquez.
Peter Gallo read greetings that were sent from: US Senator Frank Lautenberg, NJ Governor
James McGreevy, Past Bergen County Executive Pat Shuber, and Teterboro Municipal Manager
Paul Brush. A congratulatory greeting from the White House had not arrived in time for
this event.
Presentations were made to the Clubs "First Members": Woman - Jean Koles Avella;
father & sons - Joe Costa Sr., also twins Joe and Vincent Costa; brothers - Dr.
Albert and Dr. Charles Santoro; female officer (treasurer) - Marie Gallo; served three
terms as president - Anthony Niosi; served three terms as District Lt. Governor - Peter
Gallo, Jr.; and woman president - Colleen Jarvis.
A presentation to the Lodi Kiwanis Club for sponsoring the HH-Teterboro Kiwanis Club 50
years ago.
Also in attendance: Kiwanis NJ District Lt. Governor Sal Nuccio, representatives
from Saddle Brook Kiwanis Club, and HH High School Key Club co-presidents.
The Heights-Teterboro Kiwanis Club presented checks to the HH Free Public Library and to
the Kiwanis International Children's Miracle Network.
Ms. Jarvis concluded the program with closing remarks and special thanks to 50th
Anniversary Committee members: Marie Viducich, Marie Gallo, Peter Gallo, Michele Reutty,
John Koch and Fritz Rethage.
