If it seems like deja vu all over again .... see snow storm December 5, 2002.
A record-breaking snowfall blanketed Hasbrouck Heights with one storm on Friday followed
by a second storm on Saturday. Winds of between 25 to 30 mph and gusts of up to 40
mph created blizzard like conditions. By Saturday evening, 15.4" had fallen in Lodi,
12.5", in Little Falls and 11.7" in Hawthorne.
By Sunday morning, most towns had about 12 inches of accumulation. Ridgewood had 10 inches
of snow, Ramsey had 11 inches, Wayne measured a foot, and Cliffside Park, topped the
scales with 23 inches of snowfall over the two-day storm period. Total snowfall for Newark
Liberty International Airport topped out at 16.4 inches, according to the National Weather
Service.
Santa's arrival by helicopter at the Aviation Hall of Fame at Teterboro Airport scheduled
for December 6th was canceled. The December 7th HH Free Public Library's
"passing the last book" and ribbon cutting events were re-scheduled for December
14. The official tree lighting at the Circle was held December 7th -- as well as
Bill O'Shea's Florist's photo with Santa, and Heights Flower Shoppe's Grand re-opening.
At the height of the storm, the state Department of Transportation had more than 2,000
pieces of equipment deployed in an attempt to keep the roads clear. Spreaders dropped up
to 70,000 tons of salt and sand along state roads.
