Band Alumni Return
to Practice For Giant Stadium Engagement

Gov. Whitman Signs NJ State Library Bill
At Hasbrouck Heights Free Public Library
Governor Christie Whitman signed a bill at the Free Public Library Wednesday,
August 18 granting $45 million to libraries around the state for improvement projects.
The legislation co-sponsored by Assembly members Rose Marie Heck and Leonard Lance
provides that grants will be award to municipal and county public libraries for the
construction of new library buildings; expansion, rehabilitation or acquisition of
existing library buildings; as well as related land acquisition and site improvement
costs.
The measure will provide the $45 million in bonds to be issued by the New Jersey
Educational Facilities Authority through a "Public Library Project Fund."
Municipalities and counties will be required to provide a 3 to 1 match in order to receive
the capital bond funds.

Town Day 1999
Hundreds enjoyed the Woodland Park setting with ideal weather on October 2, 1999 as
the DPW sponsored another successful Town Day.
Plenty of food and soda was provided by the DPW as well as several unique
amusements.
Many community organizations participated with table top displays.

Regional MDA Telethon A Big Success
On September 6, 1999, The Muscular Dystrophy Association held it's Annual Labor Day
Telethon with a Telephone Center located at VFW Post 4591. This regional location
served: Bergen, Passaic, Hudson, Essex, Morris, Sussex, Somerset, Union, Middlesex as well
as Manhattan and Staten Island. Here are some photos of the many volunteers who gave

Summer 1999 Water Crisis
Sunday's (Aug.8) teasing rain breaks gripping heat wave.
Wednesday's (Aug.11) brief downpour was refreshing, but it didn't green up the lawns.
Weekend showers (Aug. 14-15) were not enough to green up the lawns.
Drought conditions continue.

Woodland Park Playground Dedication
On June 19, 1999 at 10 a.m., Governor Christie Whitman along with Assemblywoman
Rose Marie Heck and Mayor William Torre re-dedicated the Woodland Park Playground. The
recent improvements were the result of a $50,000 grant from the Department of Community
Affairs and bought 10 pieces of playground equipment along with other enhancements to the

Many years ago the late Ellsworth Barthen and his
brother Hank planted what seemed to be millions of tulips -- on a vacant patch of
"public property" along Route 46 in Hasbrouck Heights. What a
beautiful legacy they have left us, and to the thousands of folks who have traveled
through our community daily. |
