Senior Citizens Picnic 2007
By
Peter Gallo Jr.
A
picnic is a picnic whether it is held outdoors or indoors.
The decision to hold the Annual Senior Picnic indoors this
year, did not take anyone by surprise.
The
weather was already in the high nineties, there were forecasts
of rain, the seating under the pavilion at Woodland Park was
limited and because of the reconstruction there would be only
porta johns available for use as comfort stations.
The
Borough employees attempted to phone all the seniors who had
signed up. They began phoning prior to 9:00 a.m. with the
hope that the word would get out early enough.
Borough
Clerk Rose Marie Sees did an excellent job in preparing for
this day. This Sixth Annual Senior Picnic on July 11th was
again hosted by the mayor and council.
The
word must have gotten out, because the Senior Center was filled
to its capacity. The seniors that did attend were relieved
that the picnic was being held there.
They
had a better opportunity to move around and socialize. They
were more relaxed and they were comfortable.
The
staff that served the drinks and food was well organized.
They were able to pass out the food with little delay.
They
made every attempt to make the seniors feel at home. The food,
which consisted of hamburgers, hot dogs, sausage and peppers
and salads, was plentiful and delicious. Marge from Henry’s
Deli and her staff prepared the food.
Peter
Lieberman provided the entertainment. Gayle provided the music
for the line dancing.
Bergen
County Sheriff Leo McGuire was present. He passed out pill
boxes to the seniors. Councilmen Leonard Introna and Anthony
DiNanno, as well as former Mayor and Leisure Club member Rose
Heck, were also present.
The
only dissatisfaction registered by the seniors was the lack
of parking and the parking lot in general. Story by Peter
Gallo Jr. ###
