They were recognized for their outstanding community service efforts over the past year and were presented an award and commemorative pin. They are active members of Central Bergen AARP Chapter #418. As co-chairpersons for community services, they have organized the collection of non-perishable food from members. This food was donated to the "Center for Food Action" which services all the communities in Bergen County. The Gallos collected money during the Christmas Season to provide toys and clothing for needy children. They also collected money to provide a $500 scholarship to a graduating senior from Hackensack High School. Their on-going project is the collection of cancelled US and foreign stamps. They are sent to a Carmelite Sister. She sells them to collectors and uses the money to support a day nursery and an infant hospital in the West Indies. This award was presented as part of National Volunteer Week, April 17 23. Organizations and communities across the country pause to recognize volunteers, who serve their fellow citizens in countless ways every day. AARP salutes each and every one and invites others to follow their example. Volunteers have enriched the lives of friends and
neighbors and made their community a better place in which to live. AARP joined with the
AARP State Office team and the local chapter in commending and thanking Peter & Marie
Gallo for the tremendous gifts of their time and talent. The kind of commitment and caring
they demonstrate is bringing AARP closer to achieving a society in which everyone ages
with dignity and purpose and in which AARP helps people fulfill their goals and dreams.
