Intended for students who plan to major in education, the scholarship of $1,200 is granted to students based on their financial needs and extra curricular activities, such as jobs, school activities, or volunteer work. The individuals high school transcript and S.A.T. scores are also considered. "We would like all of the community to get involved," explained Barbara Christianson, Hasbrouck Heights High Schools Student Assistance Counselor and Event Facilitator. Individuals are needed to direct traffic for the runners on the streets, hand out water, bananas and oranges, and register participants for run. Donations, including money, supplies, and gifts, would be greatly accepted for this event. Students needing community service hours or interested adults may assist with the run be contacting Christianson at (201) 288-1426 or faxing her at 288-2083. "We hope everybody can make it to the run this year. Its not how fast you run, its whether you show up to support this worthy cause," state Larry Gershberg, manager of the New Balance store in Hasbrouck Heights, which donates money and assists with the event. The run helps to keep alive the name of three very significant teachers. Each of them contributed something special to the school district of Hasbrouck Heights. "Mr. Fitzgerald was an excellent teacher, very dedicated, and part of the Hasbrouck Heights community. We feel very privileged to be able to donate to such a valuable cause," explained Vinnie Costa Memorial Home. "Mrs. Terlemezian enhanced kindness and self-esteem at Lincoln School. One project involved constructing a school quilt that emphasized community. She emphasized that all students were part of a school community. She also wrote a grant to plant flowers and trees to beautify Lincoln and the high school," described Mrs. Stevenson Heights Guidance Counselor. "John Rau was one of the most loved and respect teachers this district ever had. He was a man who cared about you as more than a teacher or a student- he cared about you as more than a teacher or a student-he cared about the individual," explained Erin Schneeweiss, Heights teacher.
Dear Sir or Madam: On April 12, 2003, the Hasbrouck Heights Education Association will sponsor its fifth annual five kilometer and one mile run/walk to raise money for their scholarship fund. The 5 km run is called the Rau-Fitzgerald Memorial Run and the 1 mile walk is the Cheryl Terlemezian one mile fun run/walk. This event is to help raise funds for our high school seniors continuing their education after graduation. On our first attempt, we raised seven hundred dollars in memory of our three faculty members. For the past four attempts, we have increasingly raised more money for the purpose of scholarship funds. We ask you to help our event by donating money, donating supplies or giving gifts to the runners. If you donate over one hundred dollars by February 15, 2003, your company name will be placed on the application form as well as on the t-shirt. All other donations will just be noted on the back of the t-shirt. Thank you for helping to sponsor a worthwhile cause in the Hasbrouck Heights community. Please feel free to contact me if you have any further questions. Also, feel free to pass this information to anyone who may be interested in sponsoring this run. Sincerely, Barbara Christianson ####
