Hasbrouck Heights Public Schools
Superintendents Report
March 26, 1998
Junior-Senior High School
We are maintaining an ongoing communication with the community. In fact, it has been
enhanced by the resurgence of the Principals newsletter, "Heights'
Happenings." Via this correspondence, we are keeping the general public, parents, and
relatives, abreast of the many activities over and above the standard academic
undertakings. In addition, we are trying to keep as many accomplishments of our students
as possible in front of the public so that they may be aware of our successes.
Regularly scheduled meetings of the Principals Advisory Committee, The PTSA
Committee, and various student groups have continued to maintain and extend the lines of
communication.
Congratulations to Mrs. Sharon Grele of our Foreign Language department. Recently she was
the recipient of a $2000 Dodge Teaching Fellowship. The presentation was made by
Commissioner of Education, Dr. Leo Klagholz. Mrs. Grele was one of three hundred alternate
route teachers to receive this prestigious award. Mrs. Grele has benefited from the
mentorship of Mr. Walter Eggmann of our Foreign Language department and both should be
equally proud of this award.
Middle Level Students have been involved in many interdisciplinary activities in which
'authentic' learning experiences have been stressed. This month 7th grade students are
producing Math story books in which their expression of their math skills depends on their
Language Arts skills. These story books will be presented to the lower grade students in
the elementary schools.
Euclid School
After placing in the Junior Woman's club district final, Euclid Eagles, John G. and
Michael D. in Mr. Dolan's Fifth Grade Class went on to the State Spelling Bee finals.
Michael placed fourth runner up at the state level. Congratulations, Michael!
The National PTA Drug, Alcohol, and Tobacco Awareness Week culminated on Friday, March
6th, with the entire student body cheering against drugs. In the presence of our
Principal- Mr. Donnelly, Mayor Torre, Police Chief Werner, Sergeant Castiglione, Detective
Colanieri, and Superintendent Dr. Richard Stepura, our enthusiastic school spirit sang out
at the annual parade and rally.
The rally was only one of the many events that the PTA sponsored this week. The students
also were educated and entertained by the Sedacki Puppets, Allan Johnson and Tiger
Schulman's Karate School. They were able to participate in a T-shirt and poster contest, a
jelly bean counting contest, and each morning there was a raffle for those who wore their
drug-free red ribbons.
On Friday, March 6th the Euclid PTA sponsored its second Art Auction. Parents and friends
had time to preview the art, presented by Marlin Art, Inc, before the Auction began. The
evening included refreshments, door prizes and a raffle. This event was again a success
and was enjoyed by all who attended. Thank you to Mrs. Pagano and her committee for
sponsoring this wonderful cultural event.
